What Is Men's Health Screening?
Men's health screening is a preventive health check built around your age, risk factors, and health priorities. It uses medical tests to detect early signs of conditions before they cause symptoms or affect your long-term health. These conditions often develop without warning:
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
- Prostate disorders
- Certain cancers like colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer
Earlier detection can mean more options for investigations and treatments when problems are in the early stages and may be easier to manage. Below are the key health areas where screening can be beneficial for men.
Heart Disease and Metabolic Health
Cardiovascular disease accounts for nearly one in three deaths in Singapore, and heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes frequently occur together. Left undetected, they raise the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.
Signs to watch for:
- Persistent fatigue
- Breathlessness
- Chest discomfort
- Swelling in the legs
Many men have none of these until a serious event occurs.
Screening covers:
- Blood pressure
- Fasting glucose and HbA1c
- Lipid profile
- ECG
- Advanced cardiac markers in higher-tier programmes
Colorectal Health
Colorectal cancer is one of most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in Singapore, and incidence is rising among men under 50, with younger adults making up about 1 in 10 cases annually. Early-stage colorectal cancer rarely causes symptoms, making routine screening the most reliable way to catch it. Colorectal cancer screening for men in Singapore is recommended from age 50 under the Screen for Life programme, though screening earlier is advisable for those with health risks.
Signs to watch for:
- Changes in bowel habits
- Blood in stool
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent abdominal discomfort
Screening men should consider includes:
- Stool Occult Blood Test across all programmes
- CEA tumour marker
- Colonoscopy included in the Ivory programme
Prostate Health
According to the Singapore Cancer Registry Annual Report 2023, prostate cancer accounts for 18.0% of incident cancer cases in males from 2019 to 2023. Although risk increases with age, particularly from age 50 onwards, men with a family history may benefit from speaking to a doctor earlier about their risk.
Signs to watch for:
- Difficulty urinating
- Weak or interrupted urine flow
- Frequent urination, especially at night
Many cases are asymptomatic in early stages.
Screening men should consider includes:
- PSA across all programmes
- Ultrasound prostate available as a diagnostic add-on
Testicular Health
Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers in younger men aged 20 to 40, and one of the most treatable when caught early. Regular screening and self-examination are both relevant, particularly for men under 40.
Signs to watch for:
- A lump or swelling in the testicle
- A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
- A dull ache in the lower abdomen
Screening covers:
- BetahCG tumour marker in the Ivory programme
- Ultrasound scrotum available as a diagnostic add-on
Hormonal Health
Testosterone levels decline at approximately 1 to 2% per year from around age 30. The effects, including fatigue, reduced libido, mood changes, and loss of muscle mass, are often attributed to stress or ageing rather than a hormonal shift. A simple blood test can tell you whether your levels warrant attention.
Signs to watch for:
- Persistent fatigue
- Reduced libido
- Mood changes, including low mood and irritability
- Loss of muscle mass
- Increased body fat, particularly around the abdomen
- Difficulty concentrating
Screening covers:
- Thyroid function across all programmes
- Broader hormone profile available in Noir and Ivory
Understanding what to screen for is the first step. The next is knowing which tests are available and how they are structured across our programmes to suit your health needs.

Men’s Health Screening Age Guide
Your age, lifestyle, and family history all shape what screening is most relevant to you. As a general guide, screening tends to become broader and more detailed with age as more conditions deserve closer monitoring, though some checks may be relevant earlier depending on your risk profile and/or presenting concerns.
According to the Singapore Cancer Registry Annual Report 2023, cancer diagnoses among men in their 30s in Singapore are rising faster than any other age group. Regardless of age, men with a family history, lifestyle-related risk factors, or persistent symptoms are encouraged to screen earlier and more regularly.
Here are some recommendations based on your age:
Building your health baseline

Some health risks can begin developing earlier than many men expect, even when there are no obvious symptoms.
In your 20s and 30s, screening can help you establish a baseline for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, organ function, and other key markers, so changes can be picked up earlier over time.
Recommended at this stage:
- Biometric Assessments
- Blood — Metabolic Health
- Blood — Organ Function
- Blood — Immunity and Haematology
- Cancer Markers
- Cardiac Health
- Hormonal Health
- Urinalysis
Recommended Executive Healthway Screening Programmes
Core programme for a first-time screening, or Ember programme if you want to add one focused diagnostic test.
Staying ahead of rising risk

Your 40s are when risk starts to accumulate. Cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer, and hormonal decline all become meaningfully more likely during this decade, yet most men have no warning signs.
A comprehensive health screening at this stage gives you a clear read on where your health stands and flags anything that warrants closer attention before it progresses.
Recommended at this stage:
- Biometric Assessments
- Blood — Metabolic Health
- Blood — Organ Function
- Blood — Immunity and Haematology
- Cancer Markers
- Cardiac Health
- Digestive Health
- Hormonal Health
- Urinalysis
- Imaging and Diagnostics
Recommended Executive Healthway Screening Programmes
Eunoia programme for a broader multi-system review, or Noir programme if you want advanced cardiac markers and a hormone profile included.
Comprehensive screening

From your 50s onwards, the range of conditions worth monitoring widens significantly. Prostate cancer becomes the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Singapore men. Alongside prostate cancer risk, bone density loss and hormonal changes can accelerate.
This is the stage where broader, more thorough screening pays off most, and where early detection makes the greatest difference to outcomes.
Recommended at this stage:
- Biometric Assessments
- Blood — Metabolic Health
- Blood — Organ Function
- Blood — Immunity and Haematology
- Cancer Markers
- Cardiac Health
- Digestive Health
- Hormonal Health
- Urinalysis
- Imaging and Diagnostics
- Bone Health
Recommended Executive Healthway Screening Programmes
Noir programme for comprehensive coverage, or Ivory programme if you want the most complete assessment including colonoscopy.
Singapore Government Recommended Screenings - Screen for Life
The Screen for Life programme, administered by the Health Promotion Board, sets out the minimum recommended screenings for men in Singapore based on age and risk profile. Eligible Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents can access these screenings at subsidised rates at participating CHAS clinics.
| Age Group | Condition Screened | Test | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 and above | Diabetes | HbA1c or Fasting Glucose | Every 3 years |
| 40 and above | High Cholesterol | Profile | Every 3 years |
| 40 and above | High Blood Pressure | Blood Pressure Measurement | Every 2 years |
| 50 and above | Colorectal Cancer | Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) | Every year |
These are baseline recommendations. Healthway Screening's executive health screening programmes go considerably further, covering cancer markers, hormonal health, organ function, and advanced cardiac assessments that fall outside the scope of Screen for Life.

Knowing what to expect before your health screening helps ensure a smooth and accurate screening experience. For the full preparation guidelines, do refer to our Visitation Guide.
Do I Need to Fast Before My Screening?
Not all programmes require fasting — it depends on the package you select.
If fasting is not required, you may eat and drink beforehand, but:
- Avoid heavy, oily meals or alcohol for 8 to 12 hours before your appointment
- Drink plain water to stay hydrated
- Skip coffee, tea, soft drinks, milk, and juices before your appointment
- No smoking or caffeine for 3 hours before, especially if your programme includes a treadmill test
- Avoid strenuous exercise the day before and on the day
If fasting is required:
- No food or drinks, except small sips of plain water, for at least 8 hours before your appointment
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, smoking, and strenuous exercise for 8 to 10 hours before your screening
- Light refreshments will be provided after your assessment
Two things worth noting:
- Triglyceride levels can be measured with or without fasting. Both results are useful for assessing your health.
- Hormone tests such as testosterone fluctuate naturally during the day, often higher in the morning. Your doctor will interpret results with this in mind.
Preparation requirements may vary by programme. Please confirm the specific fasting and preparation instructions for your selected package with our team prior to your appointment.
What to Bring to Your Health Screening Appointment?
- Singapore NRIC, passport, employment pass, or work permit
- Recent health reports, X-rays, serology results, or doctor's notes, especially for first-time visits
- Glasses or contact lenses if you wear them — required for the vision test
- Sports attire and shoes if your programme includes a treadmill stress test
- Stool sample if collected at home — must not be kept for more than 12 hours before submission
- Letter of guarantee or authorisation from your insurer or company, if applicable
How Long Does the Screening Take?
Depending on your selected programme, the average screening duration ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours. Duration may extend depending on the day's appointments. If your programme includes a treadmill stress test, allow an additional 20 to 30 minutes.
What Happens After My Screening?
Your health screening report will be ready within 10 working days. A doctor consultation is included in every programme to walk you through your results and provide personalised recommendations. If follow-up care or specialist referral is required, Healthway's network of GP clinics and specialist services is available to support you.
Frequently Asked Questions About Men's Health Screening
Is health screening essential for men?
Health screening plays an important role in preventive care. It can help detect certain conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, and some cancers at an earlier stage, often before symptoms appear.
Early detection allows for timely management, which may improve long-term health outcomes and reduce the risk of complications. For many men, regular screening provides a clearer understanding of their health status and supports informed lifestyle and medical decisions.
At what age should men start health screening in Singapore?
Men can benefit from basic health screening from early adulthood to establish a baseline for key indicators such as blood pressure and body weight. More comprehensive screening, such as for diabetes and cholesterol, is generally recommended from age 40 onwards under national programmes like Screen for Life, or earlier if you have risk factors such as family history, obesity, or smoking.
It is best to consult a doctor to determine the appropriate starting point based on your individual risk profile.
How often should men do health screening in Singapore?
The recommended frequency depends on your age, health status, and risk factors. As a general guide:
- Every 1 to 3 years for younger men with no known conditions
- More regularly from age 40 onwards or if you have existing health concerns
Your doctor can advise on a suitable screening interval based on your results and overall risk profile.
Why is health screening important for men in their 40s?
From your 40s onwards, the risk of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol increases. Many of these conditions develop gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages.
This is also the age range where more structured screening is recommended under national guidelines. Regular screening during this stage helps establish a clearer health baseline and identify any early changes that may require follow-up.
What cancer screenings are recommended for men in Singapore?
For men aged 50 and above, regular colorectal cancer screening is recommended. This is typically done using a stool occult blood test, which can be performed at home.
If the result is abnormal, a follow-up colonoscopy may be advised.
Additional screening or evaluation may be considered for individuals with higher risk, for example, those with a strong family history of certain cancers. In such cases, a doctor may recommend further assessment or referral to a specialist where appropriate.
How often should a man get his prostate checked?
Men aged 50 and above, or those with a family history of prostate cancer, are encouraged to discuss prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing with their doctor.
What is the difference between a GP health screening and an executive health screening?
A GP health screening typically focuses on essential checks such as blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol, often as part of a routine consultation.
An executive health screening offers a broader range of tests, which may include more detailed blood panels, imaging, and dedicated review sessions. These programmes are generally designed for individuals who prefer a more comprehensive assessment, based on their personal health goals and risk factors.
What are the basic health screenings recommended for men?
Core health screening typically includes:
- Blood pressure measurement
- Blood glucose testing
- Cholesterol (lipid profile)
- Body mass index (BMI) or weight assessment
Additional tests may be recommended based on your age, medical history, and risk factors. Screening decisions, including tests such as PSA, should be made in consultation with a doctor.
Is there a health screening package for men above 50 in Singapore?
Yes. For men aged 50 and above, more comprehensive screening may be considered, depending on individual risk factors.
Programmes such as Noir and Ivory are designed to include broader assessments—such as cardiovascular risk markers, hormone evaluation, and colorectal screening (e.g. colonoscopy in selected programmes)—where clinically appropriate.
It is advisable to consult a doctor to determine which level of screening best suits your needs.
Do I need to fast before my men's health screening?
Not all screening programmes require fasting. This depends on the specific tests included in your package.
If fasting is required, you will typically need to avoid food and drinks (except plain water) for at least 8 hours before your appointment.
Some programmes offer non-fasting options. Please confirm the preparation requirements for your selected package when booking.
How long does men's health screening take?
The duration of a health screening typically ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the programme selected.
If your screening includes additional tests such as a treadmill stress test, you may need to allow extra time.
What happens if my screening results are abnormal?
If any results fall outside the normal range, your doctor will review them with you and explain their significance.
Depending on the findings, this may include lifestyle recommendations, further diagnostic tests, or referral to a specialist for additional evaluation and management.
